10G Transceiver
FAQ About 10G Transceiver
A 10G SFP+ transceiver is a hot-swappable optical module that fits into an SFP+ port and delivers 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity over fiber optic cable. It is the standard choice for high-throughput network links in data centers, enterprise backbones, and industrial environments where 1G bandwidth is no longer sufficient.
SFP supports speeds up to 1 Gbps, while SFP+ is the upgraded form factor supporting up to 10 Gbps. Both share the same physical size and port type, and many SFP+ ports are backward compatible with 1G SFP modules — but always verify with your switch datasheet before mixing speeds.
The right module depends on your transmission distance and fiber infrastructure:
l Short range (within a building or data center)
SR (Short Range) modulesoperate over multimode fiber at 850 nm, typically up to 300 meters. The most cost-effective option for rack-to-rack or floor-to-floor links.
l Medium range (up to 10–20 km)
LR (Long Range) modulesoperate over single-mode fiber at 1310 nm, covering campus and inter-building links up to 10 km.
ER (Extended Range) variants extend this further to 40 km.
l Long range (up to 80 km and beyond)
ZR (Zero dispersion Range) modules operate over single-mode fiber at 1550 nm, reaching up to 80 km — suited for metro and wide-area network links where maximum reach is required.
l Single-Fiber Deployment
10G BiDi SFP+ uses a single fiber strand instead of two by transmitting and receiving on different wavelengths simultaneously — halving fiber consumption without sacrificing speed. BiDi modules must be deployed in matched pairs at each end of the link.
